Hints & Tips
Hearing aids never bring back normal hearing. And even though today’s hearing aid technology provides wonderful benefit to those suffering from hearing loss, there are times when hearing aids are not enough. This is where assistive listening devices can help. Assistive listening devices are devices used in specific listening environments. TV assistive listening devices are probably the most frequently used assistive listening device. These devices use an infrared or FM radio signal to deliver the TV sound directly to the person with hearing loss. This way they can adjust the volume of the TV to a level that is comfortable, without it being too loud for others in the room.
Assistive listening devices can also bring sound right into a person’s hearing aid with a remote microphone. For example, if a person was attending a lecture or seminar, a remote microphone could be placed by the speaker and this signal is then transmitted right to the hearing aids. In this case, it’s as if the speaker were talking directly into the hearing aids.
If a person has trouble on the telephone or if they have trouble hearing the telephone ring, they can use an amplified telephone. These amplified telephones can have adjustable volumes and some even have adjustable tone settings to help make speech louder and clearer on the telephone. Other household devices to consider are amplified doorbells or smoke alarms.
